Children's Choir - Frequently Asked Questions

  • My child loves to sing. Shouldn't they take private voice lessons?

    If your child's voice hasn't changed yet (which happens around age 11 for girls and 12 for boys), private voice lessons may not be the perfect solution for your singer. When the voice changes, the body has to relearn how to use the vocal chords, meaning you have to relearn how to sing. This can be frustrating for a child who has invested a lot of time (and a parent who has invested a lot of money) into vocal lessons. The children's choir is a great solution because your child will learn the basics of pitch, rhythm, and harmony without spending focused time on technique that will need to be relearned.

  • Do I have to audition to be in your choir?

    No. Our choir has open enrollment.

  • What other materials will my singer need?

    All materials are provided by the Art City Music and Dance Academy. For performances we occasionally ask our choir to dress similarly (though there is no official uniform). As a result, you may need to purchase a tie or dress of a specified color. However, we try to be as accommodating as possible with our color schemes.

  • How often do you perform?

    Our choir performs in Academy concerts 3-4 times a year, and has outside performances 2-3 times a year (i.e. at the mall, at Art City Days, etc.)

  • Is this a show choir? Is this a religious choir?

    A traditional "Show Choir" performs while singing and dancing. Our choir will occasionally use gestured choreography; if you're looking for a musical theater experience, you will need to look elsewhere. We do occasionally sing music from the sacred repertoire, but we are not a religious choir.

  • My child is outside the suggested age range. Can they be in the choir anyway?

    If you child feels comfortable being older or younger than the other students, they are welcome to join. If they don't feel comfortable, contact us anyway, as we are gauging interest for other choirs. We will contact you if we create any new programs.

  • Do you give a discount for multiple students/classes?

    YES! We offer discounts starting with the 3rd child. This discount is cumulative across all our music and dance programs. We also offer a special choir discount if your child is enrolled in any other class at the Academy. Please call for more information. 801.489.8027.
