Private Program - Frequently Asked Questions

  • What makes you different from a traditional neighborhood teacher?

In a nutshell, we are different in three areas. First, our teachers are professional, careeer-oriented and well trained. The typical neighborhood teacher is a part-time hobbyist. Second, we use a dynamic, proven and progress-oriented methodology. The typical neighborhood teacher is usually set in her ways and frequently stuck in a rut. Finally, we have a specially designed studio with concert-quality instruments. Typically a neighborhood teacher uses a corner of the house and is not willing or able to invest in a fine instrument.
  • Is your program appropriate for the "average" student?

Average is hard to define, however it's hard to imagine who would not benefit from our program. We have specifically designed our program to give students skills that they will be able to use and enjoy throughout their lives in any way that they would like. If that means that they will become professional musicians, great. If that means that they wish to enjoy music in the privacy of their own homes, that's great too. Most students never touch their instrument after their last lesson. This is a tragic waste of time, money, and opportunity. We're doing everything we can to make sure that doesn't happen.
  • How much does my student have to practice?

The thing that makes practicing effective is not how much time is spent, but how the time is spent. We spend a lot of time teaching our students effective practicing techniques so they can get more done in less time. In fact, we don't really have a formal pracice time requirement. The goal of practicing is mastery, not drudgery. It's the old quantity vs. quality issue. That having been said, it is amazing what can be accomplished in a daily hour of focused, concentrated practice. This is what most of our students are shooting for; a little more for the older students, a little less for the younger ones.
  • Why should everyone be involved in music lessons?

Music, like any art, adds to the quality of life. It teaches one to appreciate beauty and allows one to enjoy the work of some of the greatest minds that ever lived. As if that weren't enough, research has shown that music prepares kids for super-success in life. Some of the skill learned in music study are discipline, concentration, problem solving, performing under pressure, small and large motor skills, creative and analytical thinking, and many others. Every successful man and woman relies on these skills to thrive in life. Music study gives kids an edge that they can't get anywhere else.
  • Are there other costs in addition to the monthly tuition?

The monthly tuition covers the weekly lesson, unlimited time in the computer theory lab, master classes and recitals. Students are required to pay for their own music, however, our music buying service saves you a trip to the music store and gives you a 20% discount. There are also a few events during the year where outside adjudicators are brought in. These events typically have a small fee so we can pay the judges.
